問題の原因は、Apple社がiPadの標準を確定できていないことだ。また、初期のiPadアプリ開発者たちは、iPadを所有せずに、アプリを 「暗闇の中で」開発していた。だから、インターフェースが非常に多様なのだとNielsen博士はいう。

レポートのまとめで、Nielsen博士は写真に触れたときのアプリの動きを列挙している。何も起こらない、写真が拡大される、写真の追加情報が表 示される、画像がめくられて他の写真が表示される、操作オプションがポップアップ表示されるという5通りだったという。

Nielsen博士はさらに、コンテンツベースのiPadアプリが、「従来の印刷物的なメタファーを破壊している」ことを批判した。コンテンツには ウェブページの基本的な双方向性が欠けていることが多く、そのためほとんどのコンテンツ・アプリでは、見出しに触れても、対応する記事にジャンプしないの だという。

Nielsen博士は、今回のレポートを発表したのは、標準を作成するために開発者たちが議論できるようにするためだと強調した。「いまこのレポー トを発表したのは、あと数カ月も使いにくいアプリが出続けるという事態を避けるためだ」と同氏は言う。
